Junior Show Rules

  1. Entry deadline is November 1, 2024.
    1. All Junior Show entries must be postmarked by November 1.
    2. Entry fee is $125.00 per head by November 1, 2024. The fee includes grooming chute space, tan bark and heated barn space at no additional charge.
    3. Entries postmarked after November 1, 2024 will be $200.00 per animal.
    4. Late entries will be accepted online until 12:00 midnight on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
    5. No refunds.
    6. All exhibitors must be members of IBCA.


  1. Steers/market heifers born after January 1, 2024 will be eligible to show. Market Animals will be shown by breeds (including crossbred and market heifers) and weight.


  1. Heifers born between September 1, 2023 through July 31, 2024 will be eligible to show. Heifer classes will be divided by age. Commercial heifers will be shown by weight.


  1. All animals being exhibited at the 2024 HBC must have an 840 approved, RFID ear tag in place prior to coming to the scales to be weighed or to the heifer check-in areas.  Contact the Board of Animal Health for more details on the 840 compliant RFID tags.


  1. All plastic visual ID tags other than the required 840 RFID tags must be removed from all Junior Show Cattle prior to coming to the scales to be weighed or to the heifer check-in area.


  1. All exhibitors in the Junior Show must have entered the third grade and may not have exceeded 21 years-of-age as of December 31, 2024.


  1. Each junior exhibitor must own his/her own exhibit.
    1. A certificate of registration must be presented to the Breed Show Manager at the designated time of check in for that breed.
    2. Each breed will accept Digital papers provided they are viewed in real-time, directly from the Association website.
    3. The certificate must show that the exhibitor owns the animals exhibited, either entirely or in part. Registration certificates are required for some of the purebred steers. Check the individual breed rules in the following section.
    4. Animals will NOT be accepted that are registered in a father’s name only, farm name only, or partnerships with unrelated persons (such as, Smith View, Smith Oak, John Doe & William Smith, Long Oak & Williams Smith, etc.).
    5. Acceptable registrations are:
      1. In the exhibitor’s name,
      2. John Smith & Sons,
      3. John Smith, Sons & Daughters,
      4. John Smith & Family (family includes sons, daughters and legal guardian youth only),
      5. Family Corporations, where the exhibitor’s names appears as a holder of the stock in the corporation, and proof of same must be supplied on or before the enrollment date, or
      6. Family partnership where only the exhibitor’s father, mother, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, grandparent, and/or legal guardian is also in the family partnership and the exhibitor’s name appears on the legal, notarized partnership. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to provide the necessary supporting documents to the Show Manager upon request.


  1. The HBC is open to Indiana residents only with exceptions as listed in rule 9. 


  1. Heifers and steers/market heifers purchased at the HBC Sales on Saturday, December 7th, 2024 may be exhibited in the Junior Show if the purchaser meets ownership requirements.
    1. Out-of-state purchasers are eligible to show as long as they meet the age requirements.
    2. Dues will be collected at the time of entry if you are not a current member of IBCA.
    3. Entries from animals purchased in the sales that would like to show in the Junior Show must be made within one hour after the close of that particular breed’s sale and must be made at the area that has been designated.


  1. Health certificates must meet approval of Indiana state health regulations. Show Cattle from Indiana do not require health certificates, but all out-of-state cattle are required to present a 30 day health certificate. A valid Premise ID number is required for all exhibitors and sale consignors.


  1. The Hoosier Beef Congress Committee reserves the right to evaluate all breed steers for breed discrepancies.


  1. No horns are allowed.  All cattle must be dehorned and healed and all steers must have been castrated and must be fully healed.


  1. A consignment to the Hoosier Beef Congress Sale does not guarantee that you will have stalls available for your Junior Show cattle in the main barn.  Every effort will be made to accommodate consignors with stalls in the main barn, however, there is no guarantee of such.


  1. No butt fans (on stands or carts) will be allowed. Exhibitors are asked to limit fans to 1 fan per 3 calves.


  1. No tents inside the barns.


  1. All cattle must be stalled in the barns during the day.  No one will be allowed to stall off of their trailer in the tie out area during the day.


  1. The Indiana Beef Cattle Association and the Indiana State Fair Board are not responsible for accidents.


  1. The HBC Show Committee has the final decision on all issues pertaining to the show.

Junior Show Breed Managers




Divisions
Divisions will be allowed in the heifer show based on the following guidelines. 
Division guidelines can be adjusted by the Junior Show Manager as needed. 
Awards are the responsibility of the Breed Association.
Less than 20 head = 1 Division
21-40 head = up to 2 Divisions
41-60 head = up to 3 Divisions
61-80 head = up to 4 Divisions
81-100 head = up to 5 Divisions
over 100 head = up to 6 Divisions

ANGUS

Exhibitors must be members of the Indiana Junior Angus Association.  

Steers: Must have original registration papers or electronic registration papers and a matching legible tattoo.  Champion and Reserve Champion are subject to blood typing and/or DNA testing. 

Heifers: Must have original registration papers or electronic registration papers and a matching legible tattoo.  Champion and Reserve Champion are subject to blood typing and/or DNA testing.


BELTED GALLOWAY

Exhibitors must be members of the Great Lakes Belted Galloway Association or the Belted Galloway Youth Group.  

Steers: Must be registered or recorded in the Belted Galloway Society Herd Book.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.

Heifers: Must have a Purebred Registration Certificate issued by the Belted Galloway Society.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.


BLACK HEREFORD

Exhibitors must be a paid member of the Indiana Junior Black Hereford Association.  

Steers: Steers must have registration papers issued from the American Black Hereford Association (62.5% or higher) and must have legible tattoos matching the papers

Heifers: Heifers must have registration papers issued from the American Black Hereford Association (62.5% or higher) and must have legible tattoos matching the papers.


CHAROLAIS

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Charolais Association.  

Steers: Must be sired by a registered Charolais bull and/or the dam must be a registered Charolais female. Steers must be at least 50% or more Charolais and have a registration certificate issued by the American Charolais Association. Steer must show a predominance of Charolais characteristics. Black steers will not be accepted. Smoky colored steers are acceptable.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.

Heifers: Purebred registration papers are required. Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.


COMPOSITE CHAROLAIS

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Charolais Association. 

Heifers only: All Charolais Composite heifers must be 50% or more Charolais with a registration paper from the AICA and MUST have a matching legible tattoo to be eligible to show.  MUST by sired by an AICA registered purebred bull or AICA registered purebred dam.  Black or black baldie heifers will not be accepted.  Indiana Charolais representatives reserve the right to make final sifting determinations. 


CHIANINA

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Chianina Junior Association.  

Steers: Must have original registration papers and legible tattoos which include both HERD PREFIX AND NUMBER YEAR LETTER tattoo that matches the registration paper. 

Heifers: Must have original registration papers with the denotation of CHIANINA, CHI-INFLUENCE, CHIFORD or ITALIAN FULLBLOOD and legible tattoos which include both HERD PREFIX and NUMBER YEAR LETTER tattoo that matches the registration papers. 


CHIANGUS / RED CHIANGUS

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Chianina Junior Association.  

Heifers only: Must have original registration papers with the denotation of CHIANGUS or RED CHIANGUS and have legible tattoos which include both HERD PREFIX and NUMBER YEAR LETTER tattoo that matches the registration papers.



GELBVIEH

Exhibitors or family must be a member of the Indiana Gelbvieh Association. 

Steers: Must have American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) affidavit signed by the breeder or registration paper. Must be 50% or greater with at least one or both parents registered Gelbvieh.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.

Heifers: Must have 75% Gelbvieh or Balancer original American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) registration certificate. Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.



HEREFORD

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Hereford Association.  The Indiana Hereford Association will accept fax or photocopies of registration papers, or bill of sale with a copy of the registration papers.  Champion and Reserve Champion may be subject to blood typing and/or DNA testing.

Steers: Must have registration papers issued from the American Hereford Association and must have legible tattoos matching the papers. No Steer Certificates will be accepted.  The proper papers must have both the sire and dam’s registration number listed. Steers out of commercial Hereford cows will NOT be accepted.

Heifers: Must be registered with a legible tattoo. Polled and Horned Herefords will be combined.



LIMOUSIN

Exhibitors or family must be a member of the Indiana Limousin Association.  At the sole discretion of the Indiana Limousin Breed Manager, Heifers and Steers are subject to DNA testing to verify parentage.  

Steers: Must be 12.5% Limousin genetics or higher (NALF orange or purple registration paper).  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.

Heifers: Must be: 1) Purebred Limousin Heifers of 75% or higher Limousin genetics (as calculated by NALF) with a NALF orange registration paper. 2) Lim-flex heifers of 25% or higher Limousin genetics (as calculated by NALF) with a NALF purple registration paper. The sire or dam from which the Limousin genetics comes from must have DNA on file with the NALF Association.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.



MAINE-ANJOU

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Maine-Anjou Association.  

Steers: Must have American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) registration papers in the exhibitors name with matching legible tattoo. Calf must be 25% or greater Maine-Anjou blood.

Heifers: Must be 75% or above Maine-Anjou blood with papers from the AMAA and in the exhibitors name. Must be sired by a registered Maine-Anjou bull. Legible tattoos are required



MAINETAINER

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Maine-Anjou Association.  

Heifers only: Must be 1/4 to 5/8 Maine-Anjou blood with papers from the AMAA and in the exhibitors name. Legible tattoos are required.



MINIATURE HEREFORD

Exhibitors must be a member of the Miniature Hereford Breeders Association (MBHA).  Original or electronic AHA registration papers will be accepted; pending or applied for papers will not be eligible to show. 

Steers: Must have registration papers issued from the American Hereford Association with matching legible tattoo.  All steers may be no greater than 48 at the hip.

Heifers: Must have registration papers from the American Hereford Association with matching legible tattoo.  All heifers may be no greater than 45 at the hip. Polled and horned Miniature Herefords will be combined



RED ANGUS

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Red Angus Association.  All animals entered must conform to all show and Red Angus Association of America eligibility requirements. 

Steers: Must be 50% or greater Red Angus from one registered parent.  Steer must be 85% red in color, polled and display sufficient breed characteristics which match percent of registration. Cattle must be officially registered in the Red Angus Association Herdbook and have legible tattoos that match the Herd Prefix and Animal ID on the registration certificate.

Heifers: Must be officially registered in the Red Angus Association Herdbook in Category 1A (100%) or Category 1B (87% through 99%) to be eligible to show.  This specifically excludes cattle in Category II and Category III.  Category 1A and 1B will show together in the same classes.  Cattle must have legible tattoos that match the Herd Prefix and Animal ID on the registration certificate.



RED POLL

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Red Poll Association.  

Steers: Must be full blood animals and either registered with the American Red Poll Association or have an Indiana Red Poll Association steer form completed.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.

Heifers: Must be purebred heifers (15/16 or greater) Red Poll blood and must be registered with the American Red Poll Association.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.



SALERS

Steers: Must be 50% or greater Saler blood and registered with the American Salers Association.

Heifers: Must be 50% or greater Saler blood and registered with the American Salers Association. 



SHORTHORN

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Shorthorn Association.  

Steers: Must be at least 15/16 % and show Shorthorn characteristics and must have the red purebred registration papers from the American Shorthorn Association. Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.

Heifers: Must be at least 15/16 % and show Shorthorn characteristics and must have the red purebred registration papers from the American Shorthorn Association. Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.



SHORTHORN PLUS

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Shorthorn Association.  

Steers: Must be between 1/4 and 7/8 % Shorthorn blood concentration and must be registered as Shorthorn Plus and have the green registration papers from the American Shorthorn Association. Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.

Heifers: Must be 50 % or higher Shorthorn blood concentration and must be registered as Shorthorn Plus and have the green registration papers from the American Shorthorn Association. Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.



SIMMENTAL

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Simmental Association. 

Steers: Must be at least 50% or more Simmental and have a registration certificate issued by the American Simmental Association.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.

Heifers: Must be at least 76% Simmental Blood and also must have a registration certificate issued by the American Simmental Association.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.


AnchorSIM-SOLUTION

Exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Simmental Association.  

Heifers only: Must be at least 50% and up to and including 75% Simmental blood to show in the Sim-Solution Division and also must have a registration certificate issued by the American Simmental Association.  Each calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration paper.


MARKET HEIFER

Market Heifers will show by weight with all breeds and crossbreds showing together.  The Champion Market Heifer will compete against the breed champion steers for Grand Champion Market Animal.


All Other Breeds (AOB)Anchor

The All Other Breeds (AOB) division is open to animals that are registered with a National Breed Association, but do not qualify under one of the registered breeds from above.  Animals that are disqualfied from competing in one of the recognized breeds are not eligible to compete in the AOB Division.

Steers: Must be registered with a National Breed Association and have matching tattoos.  Steers will show by weight with all breeds showing together.

Heifers: Must be registered with a National Breed Association and have matching tattoos.  Heifers will show by age with all breeds showing together.
