2024 HBC Judging Contest



  • There will be five divisions in the contest:

a)     Novice Division – Below 3rd grade

b)     Junior Non-reasons Division- 3rd grade to 8th grade

c)     Senior Non-reasons Division- 9th to 12th grade

d)     Senior Reasons Division- 9th to 12th grade

e)     Jackpot Division- high school graduates to 21 years-of-age 


  • Participants do not have to be entered in the show to participate.


  • Individuals and/or teams may participate in one of the five age divisions. A team will consist of 3 or 4 members. The oldest individual on a team will determine the division in which the team will compete.


  • In the team competition, the three highest scores will be used for calculating the winning team scores. The jackpot division is individuals only.


  • The entry fee is $10.00/contestant. Registration is due by December 2nd. A late registration fee of $20 per contestant will be charged for registrations made after December 2nd. Entries will close and not be accepted after 4:00 pm on the Friday of the Hoosier Beef Congress.


  • There will be six placing classes. Classes could include prospect steers, prospect heifers, or yearling heifers depending on availability.


  • Performance data will be used if it is available.


  • For the junior and senior non-reasons divisions, contestants will be asked questions over two classes, for a total of 20 questions. Participants in the senior reasons and jackpot divisions will give 2 sets of oral reasons.


  • The novice division will judge three classes and answer ten questions about one class.


  • Scantrons will be used for placings and questions classes. A number 2 pencil will be required to complete the scantron form.


  • Awards will be given to the top five individuals in each division. The top team in each division will also be recognized.
